Birmingham International Airport (BHX)
With two terminals operating flights throughout the UK, Europe and many worldwide destinations, Birmingham International Airport is the leading airport in the heart of the country, the Midlands. Conveniently located close to England’s second city, Birmingham Airport handles over eight million visitors per year.
The airport is the fifth largest airport in the UK and after Heathrow and has the highest proportion of business travellers with nearly nine million passengers passing through its doors in 2004.There are over 160 departures every day travelling to 69 destinations worldwide, 59 of which are international.
The majority of flights at Birmingham International Airport are operated from Terminal 1, with Lufthansa and SAS being the two main carriers here, while at the other end of the dividing walkway you will find Terminal 2, known as the Eurohub, from where major carriers such as British Airways and Air France operate mostly UK and European flights. Check-in desks and Arrivals can be found on the ground floor. with departure lounges located on the first floor of both terminals.
Birmingham International Airport is one of the best equipped airports in the UK with a good selection of refreshment options spread throughout both terminals. Shoppers are equally well catered for, with high street stores and duty-free outlets in good supply.
Many services such as the left luggage facility, a 24-hour medical centre, baby-changing rooms and postal services can be found on the first floor of the main terminal. Currency exchange facilities and ATMs are well spread throughout both terminal buildings, while the main Information Desk is located in the walkway between the two terminals.
Both terminals at Birmingham International Airport are equipped with excellent business facilities, with Terminal 1 offering credit card operated equipment and the Eurohub providing telephone, fax, word processing and secretarial services.
Transport and parking at Birmingham Airport
Running between the airport and Birmingham International Station every two minutes is the Air Rail link; this free rail service provides connections to mainline rail services and destinations throughout the UK. The airport’s taxi rank can be found directly outside the Eurohub building; from here you can catch a black cab 24 hours a day to the city centre and beyond.
Local buses can be caught from outside both terminal buildings, with routes 900 and 966 running to the city centre all day. National Express coaches depart for all parts of the country from the coach terminus situated outside Terminal 2.
Drivers wishing to stay for less than 2 hours should head to the Short-Stay Car Park, which caters mainly to visitors picking up or dropping off passengers, while visitors wishing to stay for up to a week can choose from three multi-storey car parks located within walking distance of both terminals. Regular courtesy buses provide links to the long-stay car parks that are suitable for stays of over 1 week, while visitors looking for maximum convenience can take advantage of the airport’s valet service.
